Awesome Banner Ads for Dexter Season 5

WARNING: This post may contain details that could potentially spoil season 4 of Dexter for those that have not seen it.

The science behind online banner advertising has figured out that I am a fan of Dexter, and as such, I have been seeing a lot of advertisements for season 5 of the series (or at least, I was in the few weeks leading up to the premiere).  Additionally, the same ads are also popping up in magazines, including Esquire and Entertainment Weekly.  I may have some bias (considering that I think Dexter is the best show on TV), but I was very impressed by the design of the ads.  The relate to the show very well, and if you are a regular viewer, you quickly understand an underlying message that carries over from season 4.  An example of the ad is shown above.  If you’ve been watching up to this point, you’ll likely love the ad and be watching season 5.  If you haven’t seen the show, I highly encourage you to start watching (seasons 1 & 2 can be instantly streamed on Netflix).

The latest batch of print ads from weight-loss drink company Slim Fast are specifically targeting Brides-to-Be.  While I can easily see how some people will take offense to the ads, I think that the underlying concept and message is a great idea and very original.  Check out one of the ads below (the other ads in the campaign can be viewed at BridePop, who I credit for the initial post).

Check out this awesome collection of creative and unique advertisements on Spyre Studios website.  The title the collection “hilarious,” but in my opinion, there not as much hilarious as they are clever and original.

Anti-Drinking Ads may have Opposite Effect

A new study has shown that Anti Drinking ads, many of which show the negative consequences and/or guilt associated with drinking, may actually be having the opposite effect on students.  It was found that “particularly for individuals already in an emotional state of guilt or shame, the ads could trigger a defensive mindset. The defense essentially allows them to underestimate how vulnerable they are to the consequences, thinking, ‘It only happens to other people.'” (quoted from an article on Live Science).

Some suggestions for more effective ads included messages that discuss how to avoid binge drinking, rather than displaying its negative effects.  You can also read more about the ads in an article on Ad Age.
